Home Made Solutions for Floor Cleaning

Floor cleaning is one thing that I wish had time to do more often. But, when I do, I want it to be as simple and effective as possible. Here are some great homemade solutions for your floors.

Linoleum

1. Do not use this recipe on waxed floors! Put the ingredients in a bucket in the following order: 1/4 c washing soda, 1 tablespoon liquid soap, 1/4 c vinegar and the gradually add 2 gallons of hot water. Use as you would any floor cleaning solution.

How to Clean Tile Floor

Don't use a sponge mop or squeegee for tile floor cleaning. It will end up leaving residue in the grout. Use an absorbent microfiber or chamois type mop instead.

1. Tile is not porous. For general maintenance, very warm water may be enough. If the grout is not sealed, from time to time give the grout a good clean with the directions found in homemade cleaning solutions for the bathroom.

2. Place 1/2 c of borax in a bucket. Gradually add 2 gallons of hot water so that the borax doesn't splash. Wear gloves if you are going to touch this solution, as borax can be irritating to the skin.

Cleaning Laminate Floors

Most of us have a love-hate relationship with our laminate floor, especially if they have a wood grain design - every floor cleaning technique seems to leave streaks!

Here's what seems to work:

1. Make sure that the floor is thoroughly vacuumed or dust-mopped. Dust on the floor will just about guarantee streaks!

2. Add 1 cup of vinegar to a pail of hot water. Plain hot water is good enough if you are using a high quality microfiber mop.

3. Mop the floor with a minimum of water to prevent damaging the laminate. Microfiber is ideal for that, as it works best with most of the liquid squeezed out.

4. Dry with a soft and absorbent cloth, or make a final pass over the floor with a slightly damp mop, from one end to to the other end of the room, in the direction of the wood grain pattern. Lift the mop at each end so that it never passes over the floor perpendicular to the grain.

Cleaning Hard Wood Floors

1. Add 1 cup of vinegar to a pail of hot water. Mop with only a minimal amount of water, and buff dry with a soft towel if desired. Too much water can damage the wood. A high quality microfiber mop will keep the water to a minimum, and clean thoroughly.
